The internationally acclaimed exhibition basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters, recently visited Bangkok as part of their 2009 “Spinning the Globe” World Tour. Playing nearly 400 games annually, the team spends considerable time flying around the world, dazzling the crowds with their legendary performances. As the Ambassadors of Goodwill™, the Globetrotters are keenly aware of the environmental effects and are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint.
On their stay in Thailand, the Globetrotters met with Plant a Tree Today (PATT) Foundation, to look at ways they can reduce their carbon footprint. The work of this foundation aims to address climate change and environmental issues through reforestation.
To kick start the Globetrotters’ mission to reduce their carbon footprint, a number of native Thai trees will be planted on the team’s behalf at one of the PATT Foundation’s reforestation sites in Thailand. The projects that the PATT Foundation undertakes not only help mitigate climate change, but also improve wildlife habitat and provide income, jobs and education for local residents.
PATT Foundation staff member Charisse Gebhart visited Impact Arena before the Harlem Globetrotters’ show. Gebhart, a lifelong Globetrotters fan, met with some of the team to present a certificate recognizing the team’s support of the tree planting.
“I’m pleased to see all levels of society wanting to do their bit to help with our global environmental problems; it is especially great when high profile teams show their support,” said Gebhart.
About the Harlem Globetrotters: Sponsored by Campbell Soup Company, IHOP, Spalding, and America’s Best Contacts and Eyeglasses, the Original Harlem Globetrotters are in their 83rd consecutive season of touring the world.
The Globetrotters have played in 120 countries on six continents, entertaining over 130 million fans and crossing barriers between cultures, societies and people from all walks of life. The Globetrotters are one of only six teams to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

THE Harlem Globetrotters will wow Malaysian crowds for the first time since their eye-popping, mouth-watering performances of entertaining basketball hit our shores in 1981.
“You think Kobe Bryant can do a slam dunk? You wait till you see what sort of slam dunks our boys do. The team have been in existence for 83 years, and the reason for that is we keep changing and doing new stuff,” Dumbar said during a meet-the-Press session at a hotel in Shah Alam yesterday.
The Globetrotters, famous for their artistic and acrobatic display of basketball, will take on the Washington Generals, specially flown in for the exhibition match as part of their world tour.
The Harlem Globetrotters played a match in Singapore last week before making the short trip to Shah Alam for their match tonight.
“We’ve got players who are great acrobats, high-flyers and those with great ball-handling skills, and our only aim is to put on a show that will entertain the crowd, and we hope to achieve that tomorrow night (tonight),” said Alleyne.
The entertainment at the Malawati Stadium begins at 8pm tonight.
